Ever wondered how does WordPress work and the steps involved in setting up a WordPress website? This article will give you a step-by-step guide to setting up a WordPress website, create a website for your business and then optimise that website to create clients for your place of business. From getting a domain name, to a good quality content management system (“CMS”) such as WordPress, to launching your site live and optimising it so that you are found in the search results. Step one in this WordPress Tutorial for setting up a WordPress website is to get a domain name and hosting
Domain Name and Hosting
There is two schools of thought when it comes to choosing a domain name.
- Exact Match Domain (“EMD”) such as an exact match of a search term (family lawyers Brisbane) dot com for example is an EMD; and
- Brand domain names. This means choosing a domain name based on building a brand rather than a search term (DIGIKIKI) for example.
Whatever your school of thought, you must read my article on Keyword Research here.
Using a Web Host
I have found over the years of developing websites that GoDaddy are by far the best company to deal with when it comes to this sort of thing. They have a dedicated WordPress hosting server and amazing customer support.
When you have decided on a domain name, do a domain name search to see if it is available. Click on Domains –> Domain Search.
You will be given a search bar, type the domain name that you want into the search bar.
Then see if it available. You will probably find that most of the EMD domain names that you choose are gone already, but you never know, you could get lucky and find a great EMD that is still available, especially if they are long tailed keywords (“LTK”). A .com should cost about $9.00 per year whereas a .com.au should be about $20.00 per year.
Setting up WordPress Website Hosting
Then, once you have set up your account and bought your domain name you need to buy some hosting to host your website on. This is essentially some space on a shared server and shouldn’t cost more than $120.00 per year.
If all of this is just gibberish then Contact us now and let us do this for you.
OK so you now have a domain name and the domain name is pointing to your own space on a shared server, what now? Well, you will need to get a CMS uploaded to that server.
Setting up a WordPress Website (“CMS”)
I am not going to bother talking about any other CMS because WordPress is by far the best.
